Civil Society Strategy for advocacy against COVID-19 & future epidemics & pandemics in Uganda
An epidemic is an occurrence in a community or region of cases of an illness, specific health-related behavior, or other health-related events clearly in excess of normal expectancy. While a pandemic refers to an epidemic occurring worldwide or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries, and usually affecting a large number of people. A disease or condition is not a pandemic merely because it is widespread or kills many people; it must also be infectious.
The world is now facing the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a virus – the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 has a wide spectrum of clinical presentation, ranging from asymptomatic infection to mild upper respiratory tract illness, to severe viral pneumonia with respiratory failure and death.
