HEPS-Uganda and Civil Society partner under the Uganda Coalition for Access to Essential Medicines (UCAEM) and Vaccine Advocacy Accelerator (VAX Uganda) has unveiled the 2023 – 2027 Civil Society Strategy for advocacy against Covid-19 and future epidemics and pandemics in Uganda.
The strategy seeks to streamline and guide civil society advocacy efforts against COVID-19 and future disease outbreaks of epidemic or pandemic potential.
The strategy which emanated from a thorough consultative process aims at ensuring that enthusiasm of the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic is revived and, vigilance and preparedness for future disease outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics is enhanced by 2027.
“This Advocacy Strategy document will guide our engagements as a civil society with other stakeholders in Uganda in a more systematic manner for effective advocacy results. It asks for more of the same, innovation, aligning the response with evidence as it emerges, and to implement interventions to scale to ensure that Covid-19 and other current and future epidemics and pandemics are effectively controlled and eventually eradicated,” observes Kenneth Mwehonge – the Executive Director HEPS-Uganda.
According to the strategy, the advocacy objectives are expanded policy and intervention debates and information exchange on epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response generally and COVID-19 in particular by 2027, improved availability of quality, accessible COVID-19 diagnostic, preventive and treatment services and commodities at all levels of healthcare in Uganda by 2027, Increased access to, and utilization of quality, affordable COVID-19 diagnostic, preventive and treatment services and commodities at all levels of healthcare in Uganda by 2027.
Other advocacy objectives are; A strengthened health system for the provision of quality, affordable COVID-19 diagnostic, preventive, and treatment services and commodities at all levels of healthcare in Uganda by 2027, Improved vigilance and preparedness at community, sub-national and national levels for effective response to outbreaks of COVID-19 and other epidemics and pandemics.
